#GivingTuesday goes viral
Hands up (we’re so retro) if you’ve seen #GivingTuesday bobbing about in your news feed over the past couple of weeks? Yesterday (in Australia) and today (US) are the action days, with December 3 being #GivingTuesday™ worldwide. This international campaign started in America in 2012, as a way of giving back after Thanksgiving. It has a simple mission to create an international day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season.
The campaign gained real traction on social media this year through the use of its global hashtag #GivingTuesday and a clever call to action using the ‘unselfie’ – a kind of anti-selfie focussed not on the individual – to spraed the word about giving and highlight why and how people were giving back on December 3. If you haven’t already, try putting #GivingTuesday in the search bar of your facebook, twitter or insta accounts to check out how people and organisations got involved.

The social media wave from this highly-successful campaign has been picked up by high profile philanthropists like Bill and Melinda Gates through to local community projects and individuals across the globe. It’s a pretty fantastic example of how social media can be harnessed to unite people around a powerful, and purposeful message and a clear call to action – in this case, to give something back.
Good Funny Smart, #GivingTuesday and The Go Tribe
At Good Funny Smart we are excited to be supporting The Go Tribe. The Go Tribe is a global giving circle – a community of givers who want to bring change to the world by harnessing the power of collaborative giving. Starting on New Year’s Day 2014, each month The Go Tribe will profile one issue and one organisation and project that is addressing the issue on their website, and invite The Tribe to GO – to support the profiled cause to help reach the giving target.
So if you or your business are looking for a great way to get more involved in giving, and make giving a habit – then we encourage you to check them out!
